Description
Two Day Continuing Education Gathering
Come join us at Roman Music Therapy Services for a two-day CMTE event that focuses on Community Music Therapy. Together, we will explore how community music therapy supports inclusivity and integration within our communities as well as how to effectively work with the diverse clients we serve within our communities.
Many of the folks we work with are isolated from the greater community. Come and learn how music therapists can be that bridge. Spend the first afternoon learning about community music therapy with a focus on the Music Therapy Pyramid Framework with Meredith Pizzi. From a theoretical frame work which includes community music therapy theories as well as theories of social capital, Meredith will take the theoretical and turn it into practical applications of music therapy within the community. The focus will not only be on clinical work, but also ways to build social capital, increase inclusivity, and enhance opportunities for integration into the community. This CMTE will culminate with the participant attending an open mic night event which ties the theoretical with the practical, through a music event that is accessible, inclusive, and that integrates clients into the greater community through a normalizing music experience.
On the second day, participants will explore how to be a culturally responsive music therapist. Join Annette Whitehead-Pleaux as she guides the participants through a deeper understanding of culturally responsive practice. This CMTE will again start from the theoretical and move to the practical. The process to truly working with clients who have different cultural identities than we do begins with understanding ourselves. To this end, participants will examine their privilege, oppression, and bias through lecture, exploratory experiences, and the creative process. Next, participants will consider the effect of bias on our therapeutic relationships. Finally, ways to be a culturally responsive music therapist will be discussed.

Friday, October 13, 2017, 12:30pm – 8:30pm: Building Social Capital through Music Therapy (7 CMTE Credits)
What is Community Music Therapy really? And why does it matter in our current social, political structures? In this course, music therapists will have an opportunity to learn about the theory behind Social Capitol and Community Music Therapy, as well as examine what their role or contribution can be to supporting the movement towards inclusivity and integration in our communities. Through theoretical explorations and expanding our notion of the definition of music therapy, participants will articulate multiple levels of music therapy practice using the Music Therapy Pyramid Framework. The concepts of music therapy in the community will be brought to life in the evening portion of the CMTE which is open to the public. The inclusive community music experience will include an Open Mic/Karaoke event open to community members of all ages and abilities. This CMTE will address theory, practice and ethical questions of practicing music therapy in the community and consider the needs of a wide range of potential clients and groups.

Saturday, October 14, 2017, 12:30pm – 5:30pm: The Culturally Responsive Music Therapist (5 CMTE Credits)
Who is the Culturally Responsive Music Therapist? And why is cultural responsiveness important in our music therapy practice? To reach our clients and students, we need focused training on cultural responsive music therapy practices. Through a combination of learning about the theories and exploring ourselves, we can begin to develop the needed skills to be culturally responsive and provide high quality services through creating strong relationships.
This intensive training will focus on the intersectional theories and privilege. Learners will be immersed in both didactic learning, self-exploration, and arts-based experientials. We will begin with introductions, ground rules, and setting intentions for the training.
The second section of the training will focus on bias, intersectionality, and privilege. First, we will discuss privilege, exploring it through Morgan’s Diagram of Intersectionality and Peggy McIntosh’s lists of privilege. Next, we will explore oppression through the Interlocking Systems of Oppression Theory. The participants will explore these models through didactic learning, self-exploration, and expressive arts experiential.
The next section of the training will focus on understanding the impact of our biases on the therapeutic relationships we have with our clients and educational relationships with our students.
The final section of the training will explore how to be a culturally responsive music therapist. The participants will discuss real life situations to explore strategies to work towards cultural responsiveness. Time will be left for any final questions and an evaluation of the course.
Registration fee – $90.00
